Bottom bracket
A bottom bracket is the steel plate bolted to each lower corner of a garage door, anchoring the lift cable and carrying the bottom roller. Because the cables terminate here, the bracket holds the counterbalance system’s full tension whenever springs are wound — making it loaded hardware despite its ordinary appearance.
What the bracket does in the system
Every force in the counterbalance chain converges on two hand-sized plates. The springs torque the shaft, the shaft turns the drums, the drums wind the cables — and the cables pull on the bottom brackets, which transmit that lift into the door’s frame from its lowest point. Lifting from the bottom keeps the panel stack in compression, which is structurally elegant and operationally invisible: the brackets do their work without moving, sounding, or drawing attention, which is exactly why their loading surprises people.
The bracket also multitasks: it carries the bottom roller’s stem, locates the astragal (bottom seal) retainer on many doors, and on modern hardware often arrives with tamper-resistant fasteners and warning labels — the industry’s institutional memory of decades of unbolting accidents, printed onto the part. Replacement economics mirror the cable’s: modest parts, modest labour, but performed only with spring tension released, so the work naturally bundles into spring and cable visits. What should never appear on any invoice is bracket work performed on a loaded door.

Why is a simple metal plate considered dangerous?
Because of what pulls on it. The bracket itself is inert steel; the lift cable anchored to it is the delivery line of a wound spring system storing the energy to lift the whole door. Unbolt the bracket with springs loaded and that energy exits through the suddenly free cable — the injury literature’s recurring garage-door accident. The danger is invisible precisely because the part looks like ordinary angle iron held by ordinary lag screws.
How does this trap actually catch homeowners?
Through adjacent jobs. The bottom weather seal mounts near it, the bottom roller rides in it, and panel painting or repair happens around it — all legitimate DIY that puts a wrench within reach of the bracket bolts. Tamper-resistant fasteners on many modern brackets exist because the pattern was common enough to design against. The rule that keeps the safe jobs safe: work around the bracket freely; never loosen anything bolted THROUGH it while cables are attached.
What are the signs a bottom bracket needs professional attention?
Rust through the plate or around the fastener holes, elongated bolt holes letting the bracket shift, a bent cable-anchor tab, fray where the cable meets the anchor, or creaking from the bottom corner under load. Any of these means the anchor point of the loaded system is degrading — a cheap, quick professional replacement performed with the tension safely released, and a classic ride-along item on spring or cable visits.
