Force limits
Force limits are the opener settings that cap how much pushing and pulling force the motor may apply before concluding something is wrong. A closing door meeting unexpected resistance must reverse; an opening door must stop. Together with the photo eyes, force sensing forms the entrapment protection required of every modern opener.
How force sensing works, and what it guards
The opener continuously infers load — older units through mechanical clutch settings, modern ones by monitoring motor current, which rises with resistance. The force limits define the allowed corridor: within it, normal travel; beyond it, the logic assumes an obstruction or a person and acts, reversing on close and halting on open. This is the SECOND layer of entrapment protection, deliberately redundant with the photo eyes — the beam catches what approaches the floor; force sensing catches what the beam geometry misses, a body against the door edge, a bicycle above beam height, a trapped object mid-panel.
The corridor’s width is the safety margin, and it is exactly what the calibration visit sets. Wound springs carry the door’s weight, so a balanced door needs remarkably little opener force — leaving room for tight, sensitive limits. An UNBALANCED door forces the dial up: with springs underperforming, the motor must haul real weight, the limits must widen to allow it, and the entrapment response dulls proportionally. That is the deep reason technicians insist balance precedes calibration, and why the maxed-out force dial found on many aging installs is not a setting but a symptom.

The dial is not a volume knob
Every increment of added force is subtracted entrapment sensitivity. Force adjustments answer a measured problem after balance is verified — they are never the fix for a door that “just needs more push.”
Test monthly, sixty seconds
Beam-break reversal, 2×4 reversal, half-height balance float. Three passes mean both protection layers and the counterbalance beneath them are honest. Any fail outranks every convenience issue in the house.
Calibration is the visit’s real product
On an opener install or repair, the measured setting of force and travel — finished with a demonstrated reversal test — is what separates commissioning from box-hanging. Watch for it; ask for it.
Self-adjusting is not self-exempting
Modern DC openers trim their own margins season to season, which is convenience, not immunity — the monthly tests apply to them identically. Electronics drift, rollers seize, and the 2×4 does not care about the model year.
Force limit questions
What is the 2×4 reversal test?
The standard field check of closing force, drawn from manufacturer and safety-agency guidance: lay a two-by-four flat on the floor under the door’s path and command a close. Contacting the board, the door must reverse within about two seconds. A door that stalls, grinds or — worst — keeps pressing has failed its entrapment protection and needs calibration before the next automatic close. One minute, monthly, alongside the beam test and the balance test.
Why does my opener need MORE force in winter?
Cold stiffens the whole mechanism — grease thickens, steel contracts, seals harden — so the same healthy door genuinely demands more force in January than July. Manufacturers accommodate seasonal recalibration, and modern DC units self-adjust within safe margins. The trap is the mechanic’s shortcut of cranking force to the maximum to bury a winter symptom: the symptom is buried alongside the safety margin, and the correct winter fix is usually lubrication and a balance check.
My door reverses for no visible reason — are the force limits broken?
More often they are working. Phantom reversals usually mean the door’s mechanical resistance has quietly risen — seized rollers, drying track lube, a spring losing lift — until ordinary travel brushes the force ceiling. The opener is reporting friction it cannot name. Treat repeat phantom reversals as an early-warning gift: a maintenance visit that restores free travel retires the symptom without touching the safety settings.
