Wind-load rating
A wind-load rating states the wind pressure a garage door assembly is engineered to resist, expressed as positive and negative design pressures (DP) in pounds per square foot. The rating belongs to the whole tested assembly — sections, struts, track, rollers and fasteners together — not to the door panel alone.
Why the rating belongs to the assembly, and where it is law
A door resists wind as a system or not at all. Pressure on the face loads the sections as beams (the strut entry’s third load), the sections hand the force to rollers, the rollers to track, the track to jamb fasteners and framing — and the first inadequate link sets the real capacity regardless of what the strongest part could take. Test standards therefore certify complete assemblies: a manufacturer’s rated door is a specified bill of materials in specified positions, which is why section swaps and hardware substitutions in rated territory must be like-for-like, and why removing “extra” struts quietly deletes a rating the label still advertises.
Geography turns the rating from spec-sheet virtue to legal requirement. Florida’s HVHZ (Miami-Dade and Broward) demands the country’s strictest numbers with product approvals and annual NOA paperwork; the broader Florida code applies wind-borne-debris rules by wind-speed map; and in the 14 TDI seacoast counties of Texas, rated doors and inspections underwrite windstorm insurance eligibility via the WPI-8 certificate. Verify the label, not the brochure
The rating lives on the door’s certification label (end stile or section back) naming the standard and DP values. In regulated counties, inspectors read exactly that label — so should a buyer.
Repairs inherit the rating’s rules
In rated territory, every section, strut and fastener swap is a like-for-like question. The panel-replacement cost page carries the full version; the short version is: keep the assembly the assembly.
The insurance angle is real money
In TDI counties the WPI-8 is windstorm-insurability itself; in Florida, opening-protection credits discount premiums. A rated door is one of the rare upgrades with a literal line on the policy.
Unregulated does not mean unexposed
Straight-line winds and tornado outbreaks ignore coastal maps. Inland buyers replacing a door anyway can often reach a meaningful DP tier for a modest premium — worth one question at quote time.

Why do hurricanes go through the garage door?
It is the largest, weakest opening in the building envelope, and its failure cascades. When wind breaches the door, the storm pressurizes the interior — and that internal pressure pushing UP on the roof and OUT on the walls, added to the suction outside, is how houses lose roofs. Post-storm engineering studies made the sequence famous, and it is why wind-country codes obsess over this one component: the door is not just protecting the garage, it is holding the pressure boundary the whole structure’s design assumes.
What do the DP numbers on a label actually mean?
Two directions of the same test. Positive pressure pushes the door inward (the windward face); negative pressure — suction — pulls it outward as wind wraps the structure, and suction commonly governs the design. A door labeled +30/−35 PSF is certified for those pressures as a complete assembly under the applicable test standards. Which numbers YOUR opening needs comes from the local code’s wind-speed map, exposure and the building’s geometry — the jurisdiction sets the requirement, the label proves the door meets it.
Can an existing door be upgraded to a rated one without replacement?
Sometimes, via manufacturer retrofit reinforcement kits — engineered strut-and-hardware packages that bring specific door models to a tested rating. The honest boundaries: the kit must be THE kit for that exact door (generic bracing earns nothing on paper), the rating achieved is what the kit’s certification says rather than what the hardware looks like, and in permit-and-inspection territory (TDI counties, the HVHZ) the paperwork is the product — an uncertified reinforcement passes no inspection however stout it seems. Where kits do not exist, the rated replacement is the upgrade path.
