Wind-load rating
A wind-load rating states the wind pressure a garage door assembly is engineered to resist, expressed as positive and negative design pressures (DP) in pounds per square foot. The rating belongs to the whole tested assembly — sections, struts, track, rollers and fasteners together — not to the door panel alone.
Why the rating belongs to the assembly, and where it is law
A door resists wind as a system or not at all. Pressure on the face loads the sections as beams (the strut entry’s third load), the sections hand the force to rollers, the rollers to track, the track to jamb fasteners and framing — and the first inadequate link sets the real capacity regardless of what the strongest part could take. Test standards therefore certify complete assemblies: a manufacturer’s rated door is a specified bill of materials in specified positions, which is why section swaps and hardware substitutions in rated territory must be like-for-like, and why removing “extra” struts quietly deletes a rating the label still advertises.
Geography turns the rating from spec-sheet virtue to legal requirement. Verify the label, not the brochure
The rating lives on the door’s certification label (end stile or section back) naming the standard and DP values. In regulated counties, inspectors read exactly that label — so should a buyer.

Why do hurricanes go through the garage door?
It is the largest, weakest opening in the building envelope, and its failure cascades. What do the DP numbers on a label actually mean?
Two directions of the same test. A door labeled +30/−35 PSF is certified for those pressures as a complete assembly under the applicable test standards. Can an existing door be upgraded to a rated one without replacement?
