Cycle rating

A cycle rating is the engineered service life of a garage door spring, counted in complete open-and-close operations rather than years. Standard residential springs carry roughly 10,000-cycle ratings; long-life options run 15,000 to 25,000 or more. Divide the rating by daily door usage and the calendar writes itself.

Why springs are sold in cycles, not years

Spring steel does not wear out — it fatigues. Every operation flexes the wire through the same arc, and each flex advances microscopic cracking that accumulates invisibly until, on some ordinary morning, the accumulated crack crosses the threshold and the coil parts. Because the damage mechanism is per-flex, the honest lifespan unit is the flex count: a rating of 10,000 cycles predicts the same total usage whether a household spends it in four years or fourteen. Age matters only secondarily, through corrosion pitting that accelerates crack formation — which is also why coastal and high-humidity garages see early retirements.

The rating is set by geometry: for a given door weight, a longer spring of heavier wire flexes each coil less per operation, spreading the same work across more steel. That is the entire engineering content of the "long-life spring" upsell — and why it is one of the few upsells whose arithmetic is checkable on a receipt. The premium typically runs a fraction of the labour cost that dominates a spring visit, while the calendar roughly doubles: on any door cycling more than a few times daily, the math clears easily.

Ask what rating is being installed

Many spring quotes default silently to the 10,000-cycle standard. The question "what cycle rating, and what is the long-life option?" takes ten seconds and reprices the whole decision.

Match the rating to the household

Light-use garages genuinely do not need the upgrade — a 10k spring at two daily cycles serves over a decade. The busy-family door is where standard ratings quietly become a three-year subscription.

The rating assumes balance

A door dragging against seized rollers or running out of balance overloads every flex, spending rated cycles at a premium. Maintenance does not extend the rating — it stops you burning it early.

Cycles explain the paired failure

Two springs sharing one door log identical counts, which is why the survivor of a failed pair is weeks from its own limit — and why matched-pair replacement is engineering, not upselling.

How many cycles does my household actually use?

Count the pattern honestly: each car departure-and-return is two cycles, the dog-walk exit is a cycle, the kids’ bikes are cycles. A single-driver household might log two to four daily; a busy family using the garage as the front door easily runs eight to twelve. At four cycles a day, a 10,000-cycle spring reaches its limit in roughly seven years; at ten daily, under three — same spring, same house, wildly different calendars.

Is the high-cycle upgrade actually the same spring made better?

It is a longer or heavier-wire spring engineered to flex less per cycle — lower stress per operation is what multiplies the fatigue life. That is why the upgrade must be specified to the door’s weight rather than swapped casually: the geometry changes, and the winding count changes with it. Fitted correctly, the mechanism feels identical; the only difference an owner sees is the replacement date receding.

Do openers and rollers have cycle ratings too?

Everything that moves has a fatigue life; springs are simply the component honest enough to publish one. Rollers, hinges, cables and opener gears all age per operation, which is why a high-use door consumes its whole hardware set faster and why the third spring replacement is treated as a system-wide signal. Commercial hardware makes the vocabulary explicit — dock doors are specified in 50,000–100,000-cycle classes.
