Sectional door

A sectional door is the standard modern garage door: three to five horizontal panels hinged together, rolling on side-mounted wheels through vertical tracks that curve overhead. The articulated design lets the door hug the opening while closed and stow flat beneath the ceiling while open — no outward swing required.

The anatomy, walked once

Read a sectional from the bottom up. The BOTTOM SECTION carries the astragal seal and the loaded bottom brackets where lift cables anchor. Intermediate sections join through numbered hinges whose barrels double as roller mounts; the rollers — nylon or steel wheels on stems — ride inside C-shaped steel tracks. The TOP SECTION carries the top fixtures with adjustable roller arms that hold the door snug against the header while closed. Above it all runs the counterbalance: torsion shaft, drums and springs (or the extension alternative alongside the horizontal tracks), doing the actual lifting while the opener merely steers.

The track geometry is the quiet cleverness. Vertical rails hold the closed door tight to the opening; a curved transition hands each roller off into horizontal rails suspended beneath the ceiling; and the slight rearward tilt of those horizontals keeps an open door parked by gravity. Modularity is the repair economy

The weight lives upstairs

Track alignment is precision, not blacksmithing

Tracks position rollers within small tolerances through the curve. Hammering a bent section straight in place rarely restores the geometry — track work is measured, bolted, and cheap to do properly.

The moving frame

Numbered hinges join the sections; rollers ride the tracks; the track itself runs vertical, curved and horizontal. Squeaks, binding and shake almost always live in this trio — the cheap, owner-visible layer of the machine.

The lifting system

Torsion springs on a shaft, cable drums at its ends, lift cables down to the bottom brackets. This layer carries the door’s entire weight and is the professional-only zone — every entry it touches says so.

The sealing perimeter

The astragal along the bottom edge, weatherstripping up the sides and across the top, a threshold seal on rough slabs. This layer decides drafts, water and how much of the panel R-value the opening keeps.

The control layer

Opener, photo eyes, emergency release, wall console, remotes. Bolted on last, replaced most often, and the only layer where the safety standard — UL 325 — writes the rules directly.

Sectional door questions

What did sectional doors replace, and why did they win?

One-piece tilt-up doors — single slabs that pivot outward and up on spring-loaded arms. The tilt-up’s flaws were geometric: it sweeps an arc into the driveway (nothing can park close), leaves part of the slab protruding when open, and seals poorly. Sectionals articulate instead of swinging, so they need zero exterior clearance, seal against the frame on all sides, and stack any panel count to any height — the design simply fits how houses and cars actually meet.

Why are the hinges numbered?

Because the door’s edge describes a curve through the track transition, each panel joint needs its roller held at a slightly different offset. Hinges are stamped 1, 2, 3… with the number telling the installer which joint they fit — higher numbers carry the roller further from the door face. Swap them casually during a repair and the door binds through the curve. It is the kind of detail that makes panel work look simpler than it is.

Can single panels really be replaced individually?

Yes — modularity is one of the design’s genuine gifts. A section damaged by a bumper or hail lifts out of the hinge chain and a matching section bolts in, at $250–$700 rather than whole-door money, provided the profile is still manufactured. How long does a sectional garage door last?

The steel shell of a quality sectional commonly serves 20 to 30 years; what actually sets the calendar is the consumable layer riding on it. Springs retire by cycle count (the 10,000-cycle standard translates to roughly seven years of typical use), rollers and hinges wear on the same clock, seals harden in a decade, and openers average 10 to 15 years. A door on its third spring set with original everything-else is normal; a door whose PANELS have failed — rust-through, delamination, multiple sections — has reached the honest replacement conversation.

How many sections does a standard door have, and does the count matter?

Four sections on the common 7-foot residential door, five on 8-foot doors, with taller custom doors stacking more. The count matters less than owners expect: more sections mean more joints and hinges but a gentler curve per joint, and manufacturers engineer the panel height to the profile. Where it becomes practical is repair pricing (damage confined to one section keeps the bill modular) and appearance-matching — carriage-style faces and window sections must land in the right row of the stack.

Do sectional doors work with every opener type?

With all three residential families, yes — trolley chain and belt drives connect to the top section through the standard door arm, and wall-mount jackshaft units drive the torsion shaft directly, sectionals being exactly what jackshafts were designed around. The compatibility questions are really weight and geometry: an insulated double sectional wants the ¾-HP-class motor, a low-headroom track conversion changes where the operator can mount, and any opener install on a sectional starts with the balance test, because the opener steers the door the springs carry.

Why is my sectional door so loud, and can it be quieted?

Noise on a sectional is almost always the moving frame, not the panels: dry hinge barrels squeak in sync with travel, worn steel rollers rumble in their tracks, and loose fasteners rattle at direction changes. The quieting sequence, cheapest first: a door-rated lubricant across every hinge barrel and spring coil (ten minutes, transformative), nylon-wheel sealed-bearing rollers replacing worn steel ones, snugging visibly backed-out hardware, and finally the opener itself — a belt drive or jackshaft replacing an old chain unit removes the largest remaining voice. A door that stays loud after all four is asking for the balance test — labouring springs make the whole frame work harder, and the noise is the frame saying so.

Can I add windows or insulation to an existing sectional door?

Both, within limits the door sets. Window sections: manufacturers sell glazed replacement sections for current profiles — the swap is the same modular section-replacement job as damage repair, and the third-from-bottom or top row gives light with privacy.
