Cable tension monitor
A cable tension monitor is the sensor a wall-mount (jackshaft) opener uses to watch the lift cables: the moment a cable slacks — from an obstruction, a jump, or a failure — the monitor halts the operator. It replaces the physical restraint a rail opener’s trolley provides for free.
What it watches, and what it prevents
The monitor closes the jackshaft design’s one open loop. In normal travel, wound springs pay torque through the shaft and drums into taut cables, and the door’s weight keeps the whole line under tension — the monitor sees healthy resistance and stays silent. Every dangerous scenario the design can produce announces itself the same way: tension vanishing. A door landing on an obstruction slackens the cables; a cable off its drum slackens one side; a spring failure changes the load the lines carry. One sensor, watching one variable, catches the whole family.
What it prevents is the jackshaft’s specific nightmare: the operator continuing to turn the shaft while the door no longer follows. Without the monitor, a unit could pay slack cable onto the floor, birdnest the drums, or drive a stopped door’s hardware — the off-track entry’s cascade, powered. Why do jackshaft openers need this when rail openers never did?
Because of what each design holds. A rail opener’s trolley is physically clipped to the door — if a spring or cable fails, the carriage itself restrains the door, crudely but genuinely. A jackshaft turns the torsion shaft and trusts the cables to translate rotation into lift; nothing physical holds the door if a cable slacks, so the design substitutes a sensor: tension reads wrong, operation stops, the failure stays where it happened. Same safety philosophy, different mechanism — mandatory equipment, not an accessory.
The monitor keeps faulting — is it oversensitive or is my door telling me something?
Assume the door. The monitor reads cable tension, and repeat faults mean tension genuinely keeps going wrong: a door binding somewhere in travel (slacking the cables momentarily), drums paying out unevenly, spring balance drifting, or the door striking its floor limit hard enough to unload the lines. Silencing or bypassing the watchdog treats the messenger — the pattern this glossary’s safety entries keep retiring. A jackshaft that faults weekly has earned the same visit a crooked door would.
Is there anything to maintain on the monitor itself?
Almost nothing, by design — it is a simple sensor doing one job. The owner’s share: know where its indicator lives on your unit, glance at it during the monthly safety-minute alongside the beam and reversal tests, and keep its cable path clear of storage creep. The professional’s share: verification during any service visit that touched cables, springs or drums, since the monitor’s accuracy assumes the geometry it was commissioned against. It is the cheapest component on the wall and the last one to delete.
