What the standard requires, in owner terms
UL 325’s core demand is REDUNDANT entrapment protection — no single failure may leave a closing door dangerous. Layer one is inherent: the operator itself must sense abnormal resistance and reverse, the behaviour the force-limits entry describes and the 2×4 test exercises. Layer two is external: a monitored device watching the opening independently — the photo-eye pair in nearly every residential install — whose absence or failure must force the opener to refuse automatic closing entirely, falling back to constant-pressure control only. That MONITORED requirement is why unplugging the eyes disables remote closing rather than merely removing a feature: the standard treats a blind system as unfit to close a door on its own.

Federal regulation made UL 325’s entrapment-protection provisions effectively mandatory for residential garage door operators manufactured from January 1993: openers had to ship with an external entrapment device — in practice, the photo-eye pair — layered over the operator’s internal force-reversal. The rule followed documented child deaths under closing doors whose force systems alone had failed to reverse. Does UL 325 apply to the door itself or just the opener?
The operator and its safety ecosystem — the motor unit, its force behaviour, its sensors and controls. The DOOR side (panel construction, springs, hardware, wind-load ratings) lives in other standards, principally the ANSI/DASMA specifications, with wind-load requirements entering through building codes. This division is why a brand-new compliant opener on a failing door is still a failing system: the standard guarantees the machine’s behaviour, not the mechanism it drags.
How do I know if my opener is compliant?
Age and equipment answer it. Photo eyes present near the floor plus a listing label on the motor unit (UL or another recognized lab) means a post-1993 unit built to the standard — the wall console’s lit display and the unit’s reversal behaviours are downstream of it. No photo eyes and no provision for them dates the unit to the pre-standard era regardless of how smoothly it runs.
