Panels never bridge section joints, crowd hinge plates, or foul the opener bracket’s strut. The door must articulate exactly as before — the kit insulates the flat faces and stops there.

How much difference does a kit actually make?
Real but bounded. Fitted foam panels bring a bare steel door into rough parity with entry-level factory-insulated tiers — a noticeable takedown of radiant heat in summer and cold-soak in winter, plus the stiffening and quieting the foam’s damping provides. What a kit cannot reach is sandwich-construction territory: no bonding to the skins, no thermal breaks at the section joints, and the perimeter still leaks per the weatherstripping entry. As a bridge on a door with years left, honest value; as a rival to the construction tier at replacement, no.
Why does everyone keep warning about the weight?
Because the counterbalance is a scale that was zeroed without the kit. A full retrofit adds real pounds spread across the sections, and the springs — wound to the door’s original measured weight — now under-lift by exactly that much: the door lands harder, the opener carries the difference toward its force ceiling, and the balance test drifts out of spec. Which doors are good retrofit candidates — and which are not?
