R-value

R-value measures a material’s resistance to heat flow — higher numbers insulate better. On garage doors it rates the panel core: uninsulated steel sits near zero, polystyrene-backed panels reach roughly R-4 to R-9, and polyurethane sandwich construction runs R-12 to R-18-plus. The number rates panels, not the whole assembled opening.

What the number measures, and how doors earn theirs

R-value is thermal resistance per unit area — the inverse of how readily heat conducts through the assembly. Garage doors earn theirs through core construction. Single-skin steel is effectively a thermal short circuit. Polystyrene tiers add rigid foam board behind the skin: honest, economical resistance in the R-4 to R-9 band. Polyurethane construction injects expanding foam between two steel skins, curing into a bonded structural sandwich — the foam adheres to both faces, eliminating internal air films and reaching R-12 to R-18-plus in ordinary panel thicknesses while roughly doubling panel stiffness as a side effect.

Using the spec like a buyer, not a brochure

Compare within a test method

Manufacturers calculate ratings differently, and panel-center numbers flatter. Comparing two doors from one maker’s line is reliable; comparing headline numbers across brands deserves a grain of salt and a gauge question.

Pair the number with the seal package

Bottom astragal, side and top seals, and between-panel joints decide how much of the rating the OPENING keeps. A mid-tier door with a complete seal kit outperforms a premium panel over daylight gaps.

Weight follows the rating

Foam cores add pounds, and pounds re-spec the springs and force-class the opener. A proper quote handles it; a bare panel-swap price that ignores it is missing a system.

The stiffness dividend is free

Sandwich construction’s mechanical bonus — dent resistance, straightness over years, quieter travel — arrives regardless of climate. In mild-winter cities it is the honest reason to buy the tier.

Why does the fine print say the door’s real-world value is lower?

Because heat is opportunistic. The published number rates the panel center — the strongest square foot of the door — while the assembled opening leaks through panel joints, the perimeter gaps, the frame and the seal lines. Industry guidance is candid that an installed door’s effective thermal performance sits meaningfully below its panel rating. The number remains useful for COMPARING doors; it just should not be read as a promise about the room.

Is chasing the highest available R-value worth it?

Only up to the tier boundaries. The jump from uninsulated to polystyrene changes the garage’s behaviour noticeably; the jump to polyurethane sandwich adds real thermal mass, stiffness and quiet. Past the mid-teens the curve flattens hard — the perimeter and joints dominate losses long before the panel core does, so an R-32 exotic behind a leaky seal buys bragging rights, not degrees. Spend the marginal dollars on perimeter sealing instead.

Does R-value matter for a detached garage?

Thermally, barely — an unconditioned, unattached box finds outdoor temperature regardless of its door’s core, because the walls, roof and air exchange swamp the door’s contribution. What the detached buyer still gets from insulated construction is mechanical: the foam-bonded sandwich panel is stiffer, quieter and more dent-resistant. Buy it for those reasons or skip it honestly; the energy story belongs to attached and conditioned garages.
