The Learn button is the enrollment control on the opener’s motor head. A short press opens a brief window in which a remote, keypad or car button can register its cryptographic identity with the opener; a long hold does the opposite, wiping every enrolled device from memory at once.
What actually happens during the pairing window
The Learn ritual is a key exchange. During the open window, the opener listens for a transmission from the device being enrolled and stores its cryptographic identity — the seed and counter state that rolling-code security runs on — in non-volatile memory. From then on, opener and device share a private sequence no scanner can join, per the rolling-code entry. The window is short and single-purpose by design: enrollment is the one moment the system accepts a stranger, so the standard keeps it brief, physically initiated, and located on hardware inside the garage — possession of the space is the authentication.
The memory model explains the rest of the folklore. Enrollments persist through outages and unplugging (non-volatile), which is why remotes survive storms; they persist until wiped, which is why the previous owner’s remotes still work after a house sale until someone performs the hold-to-erase; and the memory has finite slots shared across all accessories, which is why heavily-accessorized households occasionally find the oldest pairing silently dropped when a new one lands.
