Remote (transmitter)

A garage door remote is a battery-powered radio transmitter that sends a rolling-code command to the opener’s receiver. Each press transmits a freshly generated code from a cryptographic sequence the opener learned at pairing — which is why remotes enroll through the Learn ritual rather than being copied.

What happens in the half-second after you press the button

The press wakes the transmitter, which computes the next code in its rolling sequence — a function of the secret seed it shares with the opener and a counter that advances every press — and broadcasts it on the opener’s radio frequency. The receiver checks the transmission against its acceptance window: a code ahead of the last-used position enrolls as valid and fires the operator; a stale or alien code dies silently. The whole exchange is one-way — the remote never knows whether it was heard, which is why the door itself is the only confirmation and why the in-sight operating habit matters.

My remote works erratically — buttons, battery or opener?

Run the cheap suspects in order. The coin cell first, always — weak batteries produce every erratic behaviour in the catalogue, including the works-up-close-only signature.
