Astragal (bottom seal)

The astragal is the flexible rubber or vinyl seal running along the bottom edge of a garage door. Held in an aluminum retainer channel, it compresses against the floor at close to shut out water, drafts, dust and pests — and it is the door’s most replaceable wear part.

What the seal does, and how the retainer system works

The astragal is the closing handshake between a moving steel door and an imperfect concrete floor. Its bulb or T-profile compresses through the last inch of travel, conforming to minor floor variation and closing the gap that would otherwise admit wind-driven rain, drifting dust, rodents and winter air. On most modern doors it mounts in an extruded aluminum retainer screwed or riveted to the bottom section — a channel with two lips that grip the seal’s T-shaped edges, letting the rubber slide out for replacement without any tool touching the door’s hardware.

The seal also has a safety-adjacent role most owners never notice: it is the door’s first point of contact in the entrapment tests. The 2×4 reversal test presses through the astragal before the force system reads the obstruction, and a rock-hard seal changes that compliance feel. Meanwhile the DOWN travel limit is calibrated to the seal — the door should land with the bulb kissed into contact across its width, not ground flat — which is why a fresh, thicker seal occasionally needs a small limit adjustment to stop a close-then-reopen fault, and why seal wear stripes on the floor mean the limit is set too deep.

How do you replace a garage door astragal seal?

Replacing an astragal means sliding the old seal out of its retainer channel and feeding the new one through: measure, match the profile, lubricate the channel, feed, trim. Ten to thirty minutes, no loaded hardware involved — the safest real repair on the door.

Door down, power the opener off

The work happens at the bottom edge with your hands under the door line — take the opener out of the equation at the wall or the plug. Nothing in this job touches springs, cables or brackets.

Slice a sample, buy its twin

Cut an inch off the old seal’s end and match the T-ends or bead profile at the store, along with the door’s width plus trim allowance. The profile mismatch is the only way this job goes wrong.

Slide the old seal out at the channel end

Open the retainer’s end crimp if present, grip the seal and pull it along the channel. Decades of grit can make this the sweatiest step — pliers and patience beat force that bends the aluminum lips.

Soap the channel, feed the new seal

Diluted dish soap in both channel grooves, then feed the new seal’s edges through evenly, a helper keeping the free length straight. Bunching mid-door means backing up, never yanking.

Trim, crimp, and re-test the landing

Cut flush with a utility knife, pinch the channel ends to keep the seal captive, run a full close — and if the door kisses and reopens, trim the down travel limit a fraction per the travel-limits entry.

Why is there daylight under one corner but not the other?

Because floors move and seals take a set. A slab that has settled or heaved leaves a low spot the straight seal cannot follow, and an aged astragal hardens into the shape of its usual landing — change either side of that equation and a corner gap opens. Larger bulb profiles absorb an uneven floor surprisingly well; past a certain unevenness the honest fixes are a floor-contour seal kit or addressing the slab. A corner gap on a NEW seal with a level floor points at the travel limit or door alignment instead.

Is astragal replacement really a DIY job?

One of the most legitimate on the door. The seal slides out of its retainer channel from the door’s end — old one out, soapy water in the channel, new one fed through and trimmed to width. No stored energy, no loaded hardware, ten to thirty minutes depending on how corroded the channel lips are. The two care points: buy the right T-end or bead profile for your retainer (take a cross-section slice to the store), and work with the door DOWN so nothing surprises you overhead.

How often does an astragal actually need replacing?

Judge by feel, not calendar — but most doors want a new one every five to ten years. Sun exposure, floor chemistry (de-icing salt is brutal), and how hard the door lands all set the pace. The test takes seconds: a healthy seal is pliable and springs back when pressed; a spent one is stiff, cracked at the fold, or permanently flattened. Replace at stiff rather than at shredded — the seal fails at keeping weather out long before it visibly falls apart.

Is a garage door astragal the same as the astragal on double entry doors?

Same word, different part — and the source of most confusion around the term. In entry-door and French-door hardware, the astragal is the vertical member fixed to one door leaf that the other leaf closes against, sealing and securing the meeting gap. In garage door usage the word migrated to the flexible bottom seal. If you searched the word after a locksmith or entry-door quote, the vertical-member meaning is yours; everything on this page is the garage-door meaning — the rubber at the floor.

What size astragal do I need for my door?

Two measurements and one profile. Width: the door’s width plus a couple of inches of trim allowance — seals sell in 9, 10, 16 and 18-foot standard lengths for single and double doors. Diameter: match the bulb size to the gap being closed; the common residential bulbs run 3 to 4 inches flattened, with oversize contour profiles for wavy slabs. Profile: the retainer channel decides between T-style and beaded ends — cut a one-inch slice of the old seal and match it at the counter rather than guessing from photos.

Why does my new astragal seal leave the door reopening at the floor?

A fresh seal is taller and springier than the flattened one it replaced, so the door now meets resistance slightly earlier — and if the DOWN travel limit was calibrated to the old seal, the opener reads that early cushion as an obstruction and reverses. The fix is a small down-limit adjustment, walking the stop back until the bulb compresses to contact without triggering the force system, then finishing with the reversal test. It is routine commissioning after any seal replacement, not a defect in the seal.

Rubber or vinyl astragal — does the material matter?

More than the price gap suggests. Vinyl (PVC) is the volume standard: economical, weather-fine in moderate climates, but it stiffens markedly in hard cold — the winter-draft complaint often traces to a vinyl seal that has gone rigid in January. EPDM rubber and thermoplastic blends stay pliable across a far wider temperature range and shrug off UV and floor chemicals longer, for a modest premium. In hard-freeze counties and on sun-hammered south-facing doors, the upgrade material earns its difference; in mild climates, honest vinyl serves fine.
